Dominic Smith Looking To Help Red Sox Fan That Had Sign Taken At Fenway

It looks like baseball players can see what fans are tweeting about, including Boston Red Sox first baseman Dominic Smith.

A fan that goes by OjeleyeFactory on X has enjoyed bringing fun signs to games throughout the season. The fan had never been bothered for his signs, but the Red Sox’s game against the Kansas City Royals at Fenway Park on July 13 was a different story for him.

The fan brought a joke sign to show his support for Smith that said, “He’s not the step-first baseman, he’s the first baseman that stepped up.” The sign is in reference to the Red Sox having their No. 1 first baseman Triston Casas out with a rib injury since April.

In that time, Smith has stepped in as one of Boston’s first basemen, along with Romy González.

After the fan sat in his seat, a security guard took the sign away and ripped parts of the sign up before giving it back after the game.

When the fan took to X to show what had happened to the sign, it caught the attention of Smith.

“I feel bad for my guy,” Smith told WEEI’s Rob Bradford. “We got to take care of him. I want to leave some (batting practice) passes or something. We got to get ahold of him, but I did see the sign. I really do appreciate the support.”

The sign also allowed the 29-year-old to reflect on his first season with the Red Sox after spending the majority of his career with the New York Mets.

Smith has done multiple community events and met a number of fans and said the support they have given him has meant a lot.

“Just seeing a response from the fans, how genuinely happy they are to have me, it does make me feel really, well make me feel special, makes me feel a part of the family,” Smith said. “I just do my best to win ball games and make the fans proud.”
