Jerod Mayo Shares New Info After Scary Christian Barmore Update

Jerod Mayo and the New England Patriots will be without Christian Barmore for what feels like an extended period of time.

The Patriots on Sunday released a statement and revealed Barmore was diagnosed with blood clots over the weekend.

While speaking to reporters before Day 5 of training camp at Gillette Stadium on Monday, Mayo added a bit more detail. The head coach said Barmore is not currently in the hospital, and the star defensive tackle is in “good spirits” and receiving “tremendous care.”

Mayo said Jim Whalen, New England’s head athletic trainer since 2002, and his team were the ones who noticed something was wrong with Barmore and investigated it. Barmore was then treated by the doctors at Mass General Brigham.

Mayo was not exactly sure what happened or when it happened, and could not provide a timetable regarding when everything unfolded.

“Jim Whalen is a huge piece of the puzzle,” Mayo said, per a team-provided video. “I would also say he has a tremendous team behind him, they do the day-to-day things as well. Kudos to that whole entire staff.”

The Patriots do not have a timetable for Barmore’s return.

“Obviously, it’s an unfortunate thing. But for me, it’s not even about football when you talk about things like that. It’s about the man,” Mayo said. “He’s getting tremendous care and I’m anticipating him coming back.

“When he’s ready to go, we’ll be here waiting for him.”

Mayo and the coaching staff spoke about Barmore’s diagnosis with Patriots players after tests were completed.
