Lucas Ramirez, Son Of Red Sox Legend, Selected In 17th Round Of MLB Draft

Lucas Ramirez became the second prospect with strong ties to the 2004 and 2007 World Series champion Boston Red Sox to be drafted Tuesday.

Ramirez, son of 12-time All-Star and former Red Sox slugger, Manny Ramirez, was selected by the Los Angeles Angels in the 17th round (502nd overall) of the 2024 MLB Draft. He’s an 18-year-old outfielder and first baseman, who previously committed to the University of Tennessee back in January 2023, and is expected to sign with Los Angeles, according to Ben McKee of 24/7 Sports.

The 6-foot-3, 198-pound left-handed hitter spent three seasons at American Heritage High School in Plantation, Florida, hitting .288 in 83 games played. During Ramirez’s senior season in 2023-24, he batted .308 with four home runs, 10 doubles and 22 RBIs in 32 games while totaling 28 base hits in 113 plate appearances, per MaxPreps.

D’Angelo Ortiz, son of Hall of Famer David Ortiz, was another son of the 86-year curse-breaking Red Sox squad to be drafted — in the 19th round by Boston.

Nearly two decades ago, in the 2007 American League Division Series, Manny crushed an iconic walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning against the Angels, breaking a 3-3 tie at Fenway Park. The all-time Red Sox moment, which came at the expense of then-elite closer Francisco Rodriguez, secured a Game 2 win for Boston en route to its World Series victory over the Colorado Rockies.

In the 2023 World Wood Bat Association (WWBA) semifinals, Lucas blasted a walk-off round-tripper to seize a championship game appearance.
