Red Sox Prospects Put Personalities On Display At Futures Game

PORTLAND, Maine — The Boston Red Sox have talented prospects who can perform at a high level and show their personalities while doing it.

A national audience saw that leading up to the 2024 MLB All-Star game with Boston’s top trio in the spotlight. Kyle Teel did damage at the plate during the Futures Game while Roman Anthony’s power surge guided him to victory in the skills competition.

Marcelo Mayer made the trip for a second consecutive year to participate in the festivities as well. The Red Sox top prospect does not take that opportunity for granted.

“It was awesome,” Mayer said last Friday. “I kind of got to take the backseat in this one and watch the boys enjoy their first experience. Obviously, it was awesome to see Roman do his thing in the skills competition. It was a super unique experience, obviously. My second time and just super grateful. There’s a lot of players that don’t get to do that. For me to do it twice, it was a really cool experience.”

The Red Sox are clearly building a special core that goes beyond talent. The chemistry within their top trio was on full display during the event, playfully joking between rounds of competition while being the first to greet and support each other.

“It was sick,” Mayer added. “I’m sure you guys saw the video of us going bananas. With Roman, he had a slow start with the bunting thing. We were kind of just laughing about it and then he caught on fire. We kind of expected that out of him. It was really cool to see him do that in front of that many people too.”

Mayer, Anthony and Teel represented the Red Sox well in Texas while doing so in style with popular uniforms.

“I liked them a lot,” Mayer said. “I liked them way better than last year’s. The ones last year were kind of boring. These were pretty sick. … We had the Portland hat. It went well with the jersey.”
