Red Sox Send Four Prospects To Angels For Relief Pitcher Luis Garcia

The Red Sox announced that they parted ways with four prospects in the deal that landed Boston an additional bullpen arm at the trade deadline Tuesday.

Boston acquired Luis García from the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for outfielder Matthew Lugo, first baseman Niko Kavadas and right-handed pitchers Ryan Zeferjahn and Yeferson Vargas.

Lugo slashed .285/.375/.567 in 78 games between the Red Sox’s Triple-A affiliate in Worcester and the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs. The 23-year-old launched 16 home runs and 20 doubles with 54 RBIs.

Kavadas had 20 doubles and 17 home runs in 83 games with Worcester this season and batted .281 with a .551 slugging percentage. Since being drafted by the Red Sox in the 11th round of the 2021 MLB Draft, Kavadas recorded 271 hits in 1,068 at-bats with 67 home runs and 224 RBIs.

Zeferjahn owned a 3.52 ERA in 25 games with Portland and Worcester. The righty had 53 strikeouts in 38 1/3 innings and had a 4.90 career ERA in 233 1/3 innings in minor league ball.

Vargas posted a 4.52 ERA in 23 appearances in the Dominican Summer League, Florida Complex League and Single-A Salem.

All four prospects are eligible for the Rule 5 Draft this winter. Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow turned the quad into a short-term relief weapon.

García performed well with the Angels this year, posting a 5-1 record with a 3.71 ERA and four saves in 43 2/3 innings. He struck out 40 batters and walked 14. He signed a one-year $4.25 million deal with Los Angeles after spending the last two seasons with the San Diego Padres. The 12-year veteran owns a 4.02 ERA in 512 2/3 career innings with the Angels, Padres, Texas Rangers, St. Louis Cardinals and Philadelphia Phillies.
