Rafael Devers was supposed to play third Wednesday
When Alex Cora turned in his initial Red Sox lineup card Wednesday, Rafael Devers was penciled in at his typical third base for the finale against the Rockies.
But in wake of Tuesday’s incident, Boston’s manager decided to lighten the All-Star’s workload.
Cora provided an update starting nine a little over an hour before first pitch at Coors Field. Devers, who dinged up his shoulder in the middle game but didn’t sustain a serious injury, was moved to the designated hitter slot. Romy González took over for his teammate at third, while Masataka Yoshida proved to be the odd man out and will begin Wednesday’s game on the bench.
The starting pitching matchup will feature Nick Pivetta against fellow right-hander Cal Quantrill. Pivetta is coming off six scoreless innings in Los Angeles against the Dodgers, which marked his second shutout quality start of the month.
