Red Sox World Series Champ Reveals Contribution To ‘Tessie’ Song

The Dropkick Murphys’ song “Tessie” is a staple during Boston Red Sox games at Fenway Park.

And it turns out, three Red Sox World Series champions contributed backup vocals on the song, which debuted in 2004.

The voices of Lenny DiNardo, Bronson Arroyo and Johnny Damon can be heard on the song and DiNardo revealed how it came to be while being the guest host alongside Jared Carrabis during NESN’s Red Sox alt broadcast “Unobstructed Views” on Tuesday.

“I was a music fan back then. They knew that,” DiNardo said. “Jeff Horrigan, Charles Steinberg, they said, ‘All right, you’re a music guy, you play guitar, would you like to come in and sing backup on this song?’ We had no idea what it was going to be. And we’re like, ‘Heck yeah. Dropkick Murphys.’ So we sang during the chorus. We played maracas.”

DiNardo also reveled in the fact that he received credit for his contribution.

“The CD store back then, when you go in there, there would be this little yellow tag and (the cover would say) Dropkick Murphys, this is the single ‘Tessie,’ featuring Lenny DiNardo, Bronson Arroyo, Johnny Damon on the actual CD,” DiNardo said. “There was a yellow sticker, which I thought at the time was the coolest thing ever.”

A World Series ring and playing a part of a song that is still relevant to Red Sox fans are certainly nice feathers in the cap for DiNardo.
