Red Sox Wrap: Mariners Cash In On Boston’s Defensive Woes

Seattle evens the series

BOSTON — The Red Sox continued a three-game series with the Seattle Mariners with a 10-6 loss on Tuesday night at Fenway Park.

ONE BIG TAKEAWAY
Boston has received two instances of good news in the past week. They just haven’t reaped the benefits within that time frame.

The Red Sox concluded their series loss against the Rockies with a demoralizing 20-7 defeat last Wednesday on the day that manager Alex Cora signed a three-year contract extension.

On Tuesday, Boston could not find a rhythm even after making a series of additions prior to the MLB trade deadline. In the game at Fenway Park, the Red Sox could not cash in.

One of their additions in returning starter James Paxton made his first start back in a Boston uniform after coming back to the Red Sox in a trade with the Dodgers. He pitched well through four innings before a disastrous fifth inning unfolded behind him.

From a missed strike call to defensive miscues, the Mariners scored five runs in the frame with just three hits and a hit-by-pitch while the Red Sox committed a pair of errors. Seattle tacked on against the Boston bullpen in the sixth inning and tallied nine runs across the middle three frames of the game.

Boston’s bats rallied back in the game to score at least six runs for the eighth time in 11 games since the All-Star break before Seattle ultimately sealed the win.

STARS OF THE GAME
— Rafael Devers lifted his 24th home run of the season, going 3-for-5 at the plate.

— Dominic Smith drove in a run and smacked two doubles for the Red Sox.

— Seattle’s Jorge Polanco homered and scored three runs.
