Jerod Mayo Sheds Light On Talks With Patriots QBs After Starter Decision

Jerod Mayo isn’t anticipating any drama in the Patriots quarterback room in wake of a significant decision for the franchise.

Jacoby Brissett on Thursday was officially named New England’s starting signal-caller to open the 2024 season. Mayo determined his team’s initial quarterback depth chart Wednesday, but he explained the information wouldn’t go public until he spoke with Brissett, Drake Maye and their teammates.

Speaking with the media after the formal announcement, Mayo shed a little bit of light on those conversations.

“We’re 100% behind Jacoby,” Mayo told reporters, per a team-provided video. “I had an opportunity to talk to Drake. I had an opportunity to talk to Jacoby — separately and also together. I feel like we’re all on the same page from an organizational perspective.”

Brissett admittedly felt like the starter all along, which made sense given how training camp and preseason reps were handled. Maye deserved starter consideration for how he performed in the summer, and the competitor in the 21-year-old might be upset with the decision. But it’s very easy to argue that giving the nod to Brissett was in the best interest of both Maye and the future of the Patriots.

The veteran quarterback will try to validate Mayo’s decision beginning Sept. 8 when New England opens its regular-season schedule in Cincinnati.
