New Details Emerge On Contract Offer Patriots Were Set To Give Brandon Aiyuk

The New England Patriots were willing to make a hefty financial commitment to San Francisco 49ers star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk.

Turns out, Aiyuk just didn’t want the massive contract from the Patriots.

The Patriots reportedly pulled out of the Aiyuk trade sweepstakes Tuesday night despite it being reported they had trade parameters in place with the 49ers. NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco reported Aiyuk “did not show interest” in landing with New England.

Maiocco also shed new light on what the Patriots were willing to offer Aiyuk for a contract.

“They were serious contenders for a while,” Maiocco wrote. “The Patriots were prepared to offer the largest deal of the teams who pursued Aiyuk. Two sources told NBC Sports Bay Area that New England’s proposal topped $30 million a year.”

Maiocco’s report lines up with what ESPN’s Mike Reiss said earlier Tuesday as the Patriots looked to have Aiyuk join a group of Justin Jefferson, Tyreek Hill, A.J. Brown and others and make him a top-five paid player for his position.

The 26-year-old Aiyuk, who compiled 75 receptions for 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns last season, is disgruntled over his current contract with the 49ers, which is why he wants out of San Francisco. The 49ers are set to pay him $14.1 million this season with the possibility of free agency looming after 2024.

But despite a sizable pay raise on the table from the Patriots, Aiyuk couldn’t be lured to New England and the rebuild the franchise is currently going through with Drake Maye as its quarterback of the future.
