Red Sox Make Roster Move To Add New Reliever Prior To Rangers Series

Luis García will be in the bullpen mix in Texas

The Boston Red Sox will officially have a new arm in their bullpen for their three-game weekend series against the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field.

The Red Sox announced they added Luis García to the active roster prior to Friday night’s series opener. Boston made a spot for the veteran right-handed reliever by optioning lefty Bailey Horn to Triple-A Worcester.

Horn was one of three lefty relievers in the Red Sox bullpen along with Brennan Bernardino and Cam Booser. Horn, 26, made his major league debut at the end of June but struggled during his brief time in the big leagues. He posted a 1-1 record with a bloated 6.39 ERA and a 1.658 WHIP in nine appearances (12 2/3 innings).

With its bullpen in shambles since the All-Star break, Boston acquired García from the Los Angeles Angels in a last-minute deal just before Tuesday’s trade deadline expired. García’s experience far outweighs Horns as the 37-year-old has been in the big leagues for 12 seasons and the Red Sox will be the sixth team he has pitched for in his career.

García put together a strong showing with the Angels this season. He posted a 5-1 record with a 3.71 ERA to go along with four saves and 40 strikeouts in 43 2/3 innings. García pitched exceptionally well as of late by allowing just one run in 12 2/3 innings and holding opponents to a .159 batting average.

García will look to aid the Red Sox as they continue their playoff push against the Rangers. They begin the series two games back of the Minnesota Twins for the third and final American League wild-card spot.
