Red Sox Officially Promote 2022 First-Rounder To Double-A

Mikey Romero is moving up

The Boston Red Sox have elevated plenty of high-end prospect talent to Triple-A in recent weeks. Not far behind, Boston’s identified players on their way to Double-A Portland as well.

Within weeks of promoting Allan Castro and Jhostynxon Garcia, Boston officially promoted infielder Mikey Romero to Double-A Portland, as announced by the High-A Greenville Drive on Tuesday.

While Roman Anthony eventually rose as the star of the class, Romero marked the third-straight California high school infielder to be selected by the Red Sox after Nick Yorke in 2020 and Marcelo Mayer in 2021.

Injuries and adjustment periods slowed Romero’s progress through his first few years before he found a groove in 2024. After a three-game pit stop in the complex league, Romero found his swing over the summer. He slashed .271/.319/.498 with an .817 OPS with 10 home runs and 40 RBIs.

The Red Sox Double-A affiliate already hosted plenty of talent this season with Yorke, Mayer, Anthony, Kyle Teel and Kristian Campbell among a massive pool of capable position players within the farm system.

Portland remains in the race for the playoffs in the Eastern League, so Romero will be an added boost for those chances for the Red Sox affiliate.
