Should Red Sox Expect Team Representation In 2028 Olympics?

The 2028 Los Angeles Olympics will welcome back a few sports, including baseball which begs the question: Will any Boston Red Sox compete for a gold medal?

NESN’s George Balekji and Travis Thomas weighed the potential upcoming roster options while assembling a projected United States roster, which included none other than Boston’s much-anticipated prospect trio of Marcelo Mayer, Kyle Teel and Roman Anthony. The Red Sox recently promoted their three biggest prospects from Double-A Portland to Triple-A Worcester as they each inch closer to the big leagues. However, could we expect them to take on the Olympic stage in four years?

“I know we’re building a 10-man (roster), but the backup is — and that’s a guy we can see in the majors this year and next — Kyle Teel,” Balekji suggested. “One of the top prospects in all of baseball, a top catching prospect, I can see Kyle Tell as being the backup for Adley Rutschman (of the Baltimore Orioles).”

Balekji added: “Again, looking at prospects and how they’re coming up, I was thinking of Roman Anthony with the Sox — outfield prospect. … We’ll go Roman Anthony, put some Boston bias in this — we’re Boston Has Entered The Chat after all — Marcelo, Teel, three Red Sox.”

By then, Mayer, Teel and Anthony could be well-established big-league studs as the organization envisions them each becoming. We’ve already seen reigning NBA Finals champs Jayson Tatum, Jrue Holiday and Derrick White sport a gold medal around their necks as representatives of the Boston Celtics during this summer’s Olympics in Paris. Having a trio of Red Sox youngsters take that stage will speak volumes about the organization’s farm system and the future of the team.
