'There was a lot of love for me from the teammates that I had up there'
Being designated for assignment by the Red Sox wasn’t an easy pill to swallow for Reese McGuire.
For starters, McGuire lost a job in the big leagues, which can be tough to come by for catchers. It wasn’t just any gig either, as Boston was in the thick of an impressive fight for a playoff spot when it replaced McGuire with Danny Jansen.
McGuire’s DFA was tough on his now-former Red Sox teammates, too. And according to the 29-year-old himself, people in Boston’s clubhouse told McGuire they wished the transaction “didn’t happen,” per MassLive.
“There was a lot of love for me from the teammates that I had up there,” McGuire told Christopher Smith. “But at the end of the day, it’s out of our hands.”
McGuire cleared waivers after he was designated for assignment and joined the Triple-A Worcester Red Sox. The veteran backstop knows “it would take some traffic to be shifted” for him to return to Boston, but he clearly hasn’t lost hope of playing at Fenway Park again at some point this season.
But for now, it will be Jansen and Connor Wong handling duties behind the plate for the Red Sox, who entered Wednesday one game out of the final American League wild-card spot.
