Why Bears Backed Off Pursuit Of Former Patriot Matthew Judon

The Bears wanted Matthew Judon but on their terms.

Chicago’s pursuit of Judon was a top storyline in the latest episode of HBO’s “Hard Knocks.” General manager Ryan Poles wasn’t too concerned about the season-ending bicep injury Judon sustained last year and made it clear the Bears were willing to send a third-round draft pick to the Patriots in exchange for the star pass-rusher.

In fact, Chicago was so far along with its Judon pursuit that senior director of player personnel Jeff King told head coach Matt Eberflus that he was convinced the trade would “get over the finish line.” So, what happened?

“Our language is basically saying if the contract’s not signed, then he reverts back to New England,” Poles said.

Judon evidently was not satisfied with the offer the Bears brought to the table. Instead, the four-time Pro Bowl selection was shipped to Atlanta, where he’s set to play the 2024 season without a new contract.

It’s tough to knock Chicago for wanting a level of security in a deal that would have been pretty expensive. But you also can’t blame Judon for betting on himself and trying to earn what probably will be the last big payday of his NFL career.
