The Yankees lineup certainly took a hit
New York Yankees third baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. has been the most impactful player moved at this year’s MLB trade deadline.
But the Yankees are now going back to life without Chisholm in the lineup.
The Yankees announced Wednesday that Chisholm is headed to the 10-day injured list due to a left elbow sprain. The move is retroactive to Aug. 13. The 26-year-old sparkplug sustained the ulnar collateral ligament injury after diving headfirst into a base in Monday’s 12-2 loss to the Chicago White Sox.
That’s certainly bad news for the Yankees, especially since Chisholm has been on an offensive tear ever since the Miami Marlins traded him to New York. It’s unclear exactly how much time Chisholm will need to recover before returning.
“He’s been really impactful for us and hopefully this is something that’s a shorter period and we’ll get him back and rolling but it’s certainly tough to not have him in there with what he’s meant to our team already,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters Tuesday, per The Athletic’s Chris Kirschner. “We’ll just do our best to support him and get him right and hopefully get him back out there.”
Chisholm provided the Yankees a much-needed jolt in just 14 games in pinstripes. He belted an eye-popping seven home runs while batting .316 with 11 RBIs and five stolen bases since joining the Yankees.
It is very likely they won’t get the same production Chisholm brought from Oswald Peraza, who was called up with Chisholm going on the IL.
Chisholm’s injury could seriously impact the Yankees in their race with the Baltimore Orioles for the American League East crown. New York entered Wednesday just a 1/2 game ahead of Baltimore for the division lead.
