Bill Belichick To Cowboys? Revisiting Insider Info Amid Early Slump

It would be a lot of fun, at the least

Bill Belichick in some small way has to be enjoying life away from the NFL sidelines this season. But given the Dallas Cowboys’ early struggles, could the siren’s song be getting louder?

The Cowboys tried like hell to mount a comeback Sunday, but that bid eventually fell short, as the winless Baltimore Ravens got off the mat with a win in Big D. The game really wasn’t as close as the 28-25 score suggested, as Baltimore led 28-6 at one point.

The loss dropped Dallas to 1-2 with both losses coming at home in rather unsightly fashion. Baltimore jumping out to that early lead came one week after New Orleans pasted the Cowboys 44-19 at AT&T Stadium.

As such, Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy should be on thin ice, already a lame duck in the final year of his contract. It wouldn’t have been surprising to see the Cowboys send him packing after the 2023 season which came to a crashing end with another embarrassing home performance against Green Bay in the playoffs.

That’s where Belichick reenters the discussion. While McCarthy is now favored to be the first coach fired, there’s no reason to believe, at least not yet, that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is ready to make a coaching change. Even more so, Belichick might not be the guy for whom Jones and the Cowboys pull that lever.

That being said, it’s interesting to revisit what ESPN insider Adam Schefter said in January on “The Pat McAfee Show” where he spoke about the possibility of Belichick landing in Dallas. At the time, the Cowboys hadn’t yet decided to retain McCarthy.

What do you think?  Leave a comment.

“I definitely think he could work if that’s what both sides wanted to happen,” Schefter told McAfee in January. “I don’t think it would be an issue. Jerry made it work with Bill Parcells, and Bill Parcells made it work with Jerry. I think the same would be true if that was the path Jerry decided he wanted to go down. Bill is the greatest coach of all time. If they decided to make a change, to me, he would be in play.”

Whether that still makes sense now is admittedly a different discussion. No one would blame Belichick if he wanted to continue riding the media carousel and go through the interview process in the offseason when he might have more options. It might also be difficult to make such a major move in the middle of a season, although Dallas has never been immune to the NFL media circus.

But Jones could get impatient. He’s 81 years old and he’s probably even more motivated to do something after giving Dak Prescott a four-year, $240 million deal prior to Week 1. It’s a talented (and pricy) roster, too, and the major issue — the defense — is something the defensive-minded Belichick could help fix right away.

“If Jerry makes the move, that’s going to be the guy everybody looks to right away as a prime candidate for that job — if he makes a move. It’s just logical,” Schefter added. “Jerry wants to win. How many more chances is he going to have to win? If you can and you can go hire arguably the greatest coach of all time, would that make sense? These are things he needs to think about and decide on.”

It’s still early, but that could be an argument for or against the move. The Cowboys are 1-2, and the decimated Eagles lead the division at 2-1. Perhaps Jones lets McCarthy try to figure it out with a lot of runway in front of him. Then again, maybe it makes sense to strike now and try to save the ship from sinking before it’s too late.

We could get an answer soon, too. The Cowboys are on the road for a game with the Giants on “Thursday Night Football.” Losing that and dropping to 1-3 could be the impetus to make a move, especially ahead of a long week with games against playoff hopefuls Pittsburgh, Detroit, San Francisco, Atlanta, Philadelphia and Houston on tap in succession following that.

Belichick doesn’t need any motivation given how things ended in New England in the post-Tom Brady era. Getting the chance to rub it in Robert Kraft’s face, especially in the wake of recent Kraft-Jones news, could be gravy.
