Bill Belichick Criticizes Starting Quarterback For ‘Terrible’ Week 1 Play

'There was no upside to that play, there's only downside'

Bill Belichick currently isn’t responsible for the success of an NFL team, but he still has very little patience for bad football.

Belichick joined “The Pat McAfee” show Monday and stressed the importance of sound decision-making for quarterbacks. The coaching legend explained how while it’s the QB’s job to move the offense down the field, a signal-caller also needs to make sure he doesn’t put the team in jeopardy by attempting plays where the risk far outweighs the potential reward.

The former New England Patriots head coach even pointed to a specific example of poor decision-making, highlighting Will Levis’ costly pick-six in the Tennessee Titans’ Week 1 road loss to the Chicago Bears on Sunday.

“The play Levis had where he’s out of the pocket and flipped the ball underhand, backhand — whatever it was,” Belichick said on ESPN. “Even if you hit it, what do you really have? Not much. And if you don’t hit it, you lose the game. There was no upside to that play, there’s only downside. You know, that’s just a terrible decision.”

Belichick could have more lackluster quarterback play to criticize Monday when he does the latest “ManningCast” live from Philadelphia. The Eagles are set to host the Atlanta Falcons, whose Kirk Cousins-led offense didn’t look good at all in a Week 1 home loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
