Dolphins Star Tyreek Hill Detained By Police Before Week 1 Game

Hill still will play Sunday

The Dolphins kicked off their 2024 season on a sour note, even before kicking off their Week 1 game against the Jaguars.

Tyreek Hill had a run-in with law enforcement as he was driving to Hard Rock Stadium for Sunday’s game between Miami and Jacksonville. ESPN’s Jeff Darlington was on-site in South Beach and shed light on the situation a few hours before the 1 p.m. ET kickoff.

“Tyreek Hill was pulled over for speeding,” Darlington said on “Sunday NFL Countdown. “Once he was pulled over, he did get into a verbal spat with a police officer, who did not like the tone of what Hill was saying. At which point, he put him in handcuffs. He was later released and he has been cited for reckless driving.”

The Dolphins also put out a statement on the matter once the news broke and confirmed Hill will play Sunday.

“This morning, WR Tyreek Hill was pulled over for a traffic incident about one block from the stadium and briefly detained by police,” the statement read. “He has since been released. Several teammates saw the incident and stopped to offer support. Tyreek and all other players involved have safely arrived to the stadium and will be available for today’s game.

The 30-year-old Hill is coming off a 2023 season in which he set a new career high in receiving yards (1,799) while catching 119 passes, 13 of which went for touchdowns. The Dolphins restructured Hill’s contract in August, which set up the eight-time Pro Bowl selection to earn up to $90 million over the next three seasons.
