Fleet GM Danielle Marmer Believes New Name ‘Reflects Team Identity’

The PWHL revealed the names and logos of the league’s six franchises Monday, and the Beantown hockey club will no longer be known as PWHL Boston. Its new name is the Boston Fleet.

“It’s amazing,” Fleet general manager Danielle Marmer said on Thursday’s episode of NESN’s “Respect Her Game” podcast. “It’s so exciting to have an identity, a team name. Saying PWHL before every team was getting a little tricky. It doesn’t quite roll off the tongue as nicely as Boston Fleet. I’m excited.”

Although the PWHL ultimately decided on each of the names and logos, Marmer participated in the process for her club and couldn’t be happier with the end result.

“I love the logo. The anchor, the idea of Fleet,” she said. “Boston has such a rich nautical and Maritime history. When you land at Logan Airport, you’re flying over the seaport in the harbor, and you get to see it all.

“To be able to connect that history with our team and this idea of being one fleet, ships being strong on their own but so much stronger when they’re together. It just feels like it reflects our team identity really strongly.”

The Fleet released a couple of social media posts teasing the new name before the reveal, and Marmer said the Boston players found out at the same time as the rest of the world.

With a new name comes new traditions as well. Marmer said she saw some fans commenting that their fandom could possibly be called “the crew,” and seats behind the nets could be labeled as the stern and the bow. Also, the Fleet are kicking around the idea of possibly having a fog horn sound off when Boston scores instead of a regular goal horn.

“I’m hopeful (the fans) really embrace this and just run with it,” Marmer said. “Create their own little engagements and the things they can get excited about during our games.”
