How Patriots’ Jacoby Brissett Explained Back-Breaking Interception

Brissett committed two turnovers in New England's loss

Patriots quarterback Jacoby Brissett had another below-average showing completing just 19 of 32 passes for 168 yards in New England’s blowout loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.

Brissett not only averaged just 5.3 yards per completion, but the veteran signal-caller threw a costly interception early in the second quarter, which turned into a pick-six by 49ers linebacker Fred Warner. Brissett took responsibility for the play when he spoke with reporters following the Patriots’ loss

“We had a in-cut coming behind the ‘backers,” Brissett explained, per team-provided video. “Hats off to Fred. He made a great play, but I think I put a bad ball out there and just a better throw would have picked up the first down.”

Along with the interception, the Patriots had two other turnovers, one of which led to the 49ers tacking on a field goal late in the first quarter. Brissett said the offense’s performance was “tough” in New England’s third straight loss.

“We can’t spot them two turnovers like that,” he said. “We can’t put our defense in a bad position like that.

“That’s really where it starts. It comes back down to the fundamentals of execution. We really beat ourselves. We get a drive going, and then something happens. Honestly, we aren’t good enough to play against ourselves and the defense.”

After the turnover, Patriots fans flocked to social media calling for rookie Drake Maye to take over the starting role. Despite the Patriots’ third straight loss with Brissett under center, Jerod Mayo reiterated the veteran is New England’s starting quarterback.
