How Red Sox’s Roman Anthony Reacted To Earning Spot As MLB Top Prospect

WORCESTER, Mass. — Roman Anthony continues his swift rise through the Boston Red Sox farm system and added a key accolade to his resume.

With the graduation of Tampa Bay Rays infielder Junior Caminero, Anthony elevated to the top spot on Baseball America’s prospect list as the No. 1 prospect in baseball.

There’s been no shortage of hype and attention surrounding Anthony over the last calendar year, winning Offensive Player of the Year honors in Boston’s organization last season. He also emerged with Marcelo Mayer and Kyle Teel as the highly-publicized “Big Three’ identity of prospects for the Red Sox.

That’s created a humble mindset for the Red Sox prospect with the latest honor of his young career to keep his mind on the current goals in Triple-A Worcester.

“Nothing really changes,” Anthony told NESN.com at Polar Park on Thursday. “The idea of showing up every day and continuing to get better. Continuing to handle the task at hand right now, which is to help this team win. To help get better and really dial in on the little things. That hasn’t changed all year and that won’t change, even going into the offseason. Nothing really changes.”

Anthony continued: “You just know when you have that title that there’s always a target on your back. Showing up every day knowing that you’ve got to take advantage of it at the same time. That’s a blessing. It isn’t the end all be all. The goal isn’t just to be the No. 1 prospect. The goal is to go out there and be a great big-leaguer and stick there and help the team win. That’s the ultimate goal, which doesn’t change.”

Anthony and the Worcester Red Sox finish this home series against the Syracuse Mets before rounding out the regular season on the road next week against the LeHigh Valley IronPigs.
