Jets Defense Could Be Undermanned In Matchup Against Patriots

The Patriots defense was dealt a huge blow Monday, but the New York Jets also could be without multiple key contributors Thursday night.

New England reportedly lost Ja’Whaun Bentley for the season due to a torn pec, which came after the entire offensive line popped up on its projected injury report.

New York had linebacker C.J. Mosley, and cornerbacks Michael Carter II and D.J. Reed on their injury reports. Mosley suffered a big toe injury in the Jets’ win over the Tennessee Titans in Week 2 that forced him to leave mid-game.

Head coach Robert Saleh on Tuesday told reporters that Carter was fine and that Mosley and Reed were progressing well. When asked for specifics, Saleh admitted that they were closer to “50-50.”

The loss of Mosley would be huge for the Jets since he’s one of their top run-stoppers and the leader for their defense like Bentley was for the Patriots. His loss would be compounded by Jermaine Johnson suffering a season-ending Achilles injury. Saleh was confident that Jamien Sherwood could step up for Mosley if the veteran missed Thursday’s game.

Updates on injuries from both sides likely will be known closer to kickoff Thursday as New England tries to play spoiler for New York’s home opener.
