Mac Jones To Dolphins Makes Even More Sense After Week 3 Loss

Tua Tagovailoa's backup exited the game due to injury

Miami Dolphins starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was placed on injured reserve after a devastating concussion in Week 2. Unfortunately for the Dolphins, the status of backup signal-caller Skylar Thompson now is in question after he sustained a rib injury against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.

Third-string quarterback Tim Boyle took over after Thompson suffered the injury with 9:46 left in the third quarter. Boyle played the rest of the way and completed 7-of-13 passes for 79 yards in a one-sided 24-3 loss to Seattle.

“It’s unfortunate, but such is the nature of the National Football League,” Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel told reporters, per a team-provided video. “It’s tough, but the National Football League is tough.”

The future of Tagovailoa, who suffered two documented concussions last season, is up in the air. There’s a chance he does not return to the Dolphins any time soon, if at all. Now the fact the Dolphins suffered a second quarterback injury in two games makes it even more of a possibility they target someone externally.

They should. Especially since it’s not like Thompson (13-for-19, 107 yards) shredded the Seahawks during his first half-plus. He did not look worthy of a starting job. Miami’s two quarterbacks combined for 140 yards passing.

“I think you have to look at everything,” McDaniel said. “And you have to find a way to give your team the best chance to win.”

Enter Jacksonville Jaguars backup quarterback Mac Jones.

Jones was involved in trade speculation to Miami even before the Week 3 game. The 2021 first-round pick regressed during his final seasons with the New England Patriots, but impressed with the Jaguars during the preseason.

Jones looked worthy of a second chance before the season started, and the resurgence of those like Sam Darnold, Baker Mayfield and others surely have helped Jones’ case.

“Bottom line is I see the quarterback as an extension of the offense, and the offense is an extension of me, and three points (against Seattle), I’ve never won a game scoring three points,” McDaniel said. “So, I think collectively, starting with me, it just needs to be better. We have to get it figured out fast.”

A trade for Jones might be the fastest way to do it. Much like Tagovailoa, Jones can steer a car full of playmakers. It might even give the Dolphins an inexpensive look at their potential quarterback of the future, as Jones is on the final year of his rookie contract and set to hit free agency in the offseason.

Jones, who’s well-connected to former Alabama products like wide receiver Jaylen Waddle and Tagovailoa, would make a lot of sense for the offensive-minded McDaniel. San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan, who McDaniel worked under, reportedly was enamored by Jones ahead of the 2021 NFL Draft.

Jones almost certainly would be better in Miami than either Thompson or Boyle, and maybe even lift the ‘Fins back into playoff contention.
