Red Sox Wrap: Nick Pivetta Dominates Before Boston Walks Off In Extra Innings

BOSTON — The Red Sox wrapped up a three-game series with the Baltimore Orioles with thrilling 5-3 walk-off victory in 10 innings on Wednesday night at Fenway Park.

With the win, Boston improves to 74-72 while Baltimore fell to 83-64.

ONE BIG TAKEAWAY
Boston got three solid starts against the Orioles in the series. No start was better than the one Nick Pivetta turned in, though.

The Red Sox starter stayed resilient throughout the evening, turning to plenty of swings-and-misses with his curveball and spotting up his arsenal around the zone. He stranded runners on base in four of his six innings and did so in style with a strikeout to end four of six innings as well.

Pivetta did not falter after the lone mistake he made, a hanging sweeper that Baltimore third baseman Emmanuel Rivera launched over the Green Monster for a solo home run. Pivetta went right after the talented Baltimore lineup, worked efficiently and gave Boston the needed effort to have a chance to win the series.

Unfortunately, his lack of run support proved costly in the eighth inning when Baltimore designated hitter Anthony Santander unloaded to right field to tie the game against Red Sox reliever Justin Slaten.

In extra innings, Tyler O’Neill saved the day with a walk-off three-run home run for the Red Sox to take a second consecutive series from Baltimore.

— Pivetta induced 13 swings-and-misses across six strong frames for the Red Sox. He allowed one run on four hits with one walk and nine strikeouts.

— Ceddanne Rafaela gave the Red Sox the lead with his 70th RBI of the season in the fourth inning with a single to left.
