Status Quo? Jerod Mayo Gives Latest Update On Patriots’ QB Situation

The New England Patriots are sticking with Jacoby Brissett — for now.

This shouldn’t come as a surprise, as Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo indicated as much last week after New England’s 24-3 loss to the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium.

But Mayo was asked again Monday whether it’s “status quo” at the quarterback position as the Patriots plan for this Sunday’s road matchup with the San Francisco 49ers.

“Yeah. Right now, Jacoby is still our starting quarterback,” Mayo told reporters at Gillette Stadium. “Even after the game, I watched that film the whole way back home. I got in early in the morning and still felt the same way. We have to support him across the board as a coaching staff and as players. We have to support him, keep him clean and hopefully give him opportunities to look for the open receiver.”

Drake Maye replaced Brissett in the closing minutes of last Thursday’s loss. It marked the rookie’s NFL debut, but Patriots fans will need to wait a bit longer for Maye’s first career start.

It makes sense, as Brissett has been getting pummeled behind a makeshift offensive line. Why expose Maye — the third overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft and the potential long-term face of the franchise — to the same pressure and risk injury and/or shattering the 22-year-old’s confidence?

That said, it’s likely only a matter of time before we see the Patriots hand the keys to Maye this season. New England suffered back-to-back losses after its Week 1 upset win over the Cincinnati Bengals and probably will need a shot in the arm at some point.

Brissett completed 12 of 18 passes for 98 yards in the Patriots’ Week 3 loss. He was sacked five times. Maye went 4 of 8 for 22 yards and rushed twice for 12 yards.
