Boston now is in crunch time with its roster construction
Don Sweeney acknowledged “really hard” roster decisions were on the horizon after the Bruins signed Jeremy Swayman to an expensive long-term contract.
Boston likely will make a series of transactions ahead of its regular-season opener Tuesday evening in Florida. But two were made in the immediate aftermath of Swayman’s new deal.
Brandon Bussi and Jiri Patera were placed on waivers by the Bruins on Sunday, per the NHL’s wire. The pair of netminders were two of five players placed on waivers by Boston after its preseason finale, joining Billy Sweezey, Patrick Brown and Jeffrey Viel.
Bussi, who joined the Bruins organization on an entry-level contract in March 2022, was the starting goalie for Boston’s exhibition clash with the Washington Capitals on Saturday. The 26-year-old, as long as he clears waivers, still could be the Bruins’ backup netminder for their Opening Night tilt with the Panthers on Tuesday. Joonas Korpisalo will be the starter, and Jim Montgomery and company might not prefer Swayman as the No. 2 since he didn’t play in the preseason.
Patera’s Bruins tenure could prove to last less than a week. Boston claimed the 25-year-old off waivers from the Vancouver Canucks on Wednesday while Swayman’s contract situation still was unresolved. He has eight games of NHL experience under his belt, all played with the Vegas Golden Knights.
