Celtics Reveal Details For Banner-Raising Ceremony To Kick Off Season

The Boston Celtics don’t have to wait much longer to raise a championship banner to the TD Garden rafters.

Banner No. 18 will hang high above the parquet floor next Tuesday prior to the Celtics beginning the 2024-25 season against the New York Knicks.

The franchise will mark the occasion with a special pregame ceremony and released details Tuesday about what fans can expect from it. Celtics players and the team’s coaching staff will be joined on the court by NBA commissioner Adam Silver along with Celtics legends. They presumably will help hand out the team’s championship rings before players and coaches hoist the banner skyward.

The Celtics announced the ceremony is expected to start at 7 p.m. ET with tip off coming 30 minutes later.

“The pride and passion Celtics fans exemplify provides us a truly unique advantage every time we play in TD Garden,” Celtics team president Rich Gotham said in a statement. “We look forward to celebrating and sharing with them our record 18th championship the night of Oct. 22 as we begin the quest to raise our next banner.”

Raising the banner will conclude a months-long celebration of the Celtics winning the NBA title over the Dallas Mavericks back in June and also set the stage of Boston trying to repeat. The NBA hasn’t had a repeat champion since the Golden State Warriors did it in 2018.

Boston also will get its first chance to take on the new-look Knicks, who loaded up in the offseason by trading for Mikal Bridges and Karl-Anthony Towns.
