Jeremy Swayman Appears To Have Accomplished Bruins Offseason Goal

Jeremy Swayman had an outspoken goal during his contract negotiations with the Bruins, and it might have been accomplished.

Swayman signed an eight-year, $66 million contract with Boston last offseason. The deal ended an extended standoff between the sides and secured the goalie’s future with the team.

One of Swayman’s goals during negotiations was to set the market for future goalies. The first evidence of him doing that was when Linus Ullmark signed a similar deal with the Ottawa Senators last week. Then on Thursday, the Dallas Stars signed Jake Oettinger to the same financial terms, too.

Before the deal was officially announced, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported the sides were close to a deal and described the goalie’s extension as being in the “Jeremy Swayman range.” Oettinger, who is the same age as Swayman, didn’t receive a contract in the range of Carey Price or Sergei Bobrovsky. However, the $8.25 million average annual value seems to be the sweet spot for teams.

The deals put Swayman, Ullmark and Oettinger tied for fourth among the highest-paid goalies in the NHL. It’s not No. 1, but it might be safe to say that Swayman set the goalie market.
