Jerod Mayo Makes Honest Admission About Rhamondre Stevenson’s Role

Rhamondre Stevenson’s fumbling issues were brutal blows to the Patriots’ poor start to the season, and head coach Jerod Mayo might need to make a drastic move.

Stevenson seemingly cemented himself as a core contributor to New England when he signed a contract extension last summer. However, the fourth-year running back fumbled four times in four games to start the season, which put the Patriots defense in tough spots and prevented the offense from getting into a rhythm.

Mayo backed his running back after New England’s loss to the San Francisco 49ers in Week 4, but the head coach had a different tune when asked if Stevenson would lose his starting status due to his fumbling issues.

“That’s definitely under consideration,” Mayo told reporters, per team-provided video. “I’ve had multiple conversations with Rhamondre. But we can’t preach ball security is job security and still have him out there the majority of the time. I think it sends a stronger message to the players that there are certain things we just can’t do to win, especially with the team we have to win.”

Bill Belichick benched Stevenson during his rookie season when the running back fumbled multiple times and highlighted the message, “Ball security is job security.” Fans could expect Antonio Gibson to start and for Mayo to take a page out of his predecessor’s book.

No matter who the starting running back will be this Sunday, they’ll face an uphill battle with David Andrews headed to season-injured reserve along with multiple other offensive line injuries.
