Brunson was one of the few bright spots for New York
Jalen Brunson took a pay cut so that the Knicks could build a championship team around him, but the Celtics showed them what a real title team looks like.
Boston made 29 3-pointers in a 132-109 win at TD Garden. It tied the NBA record for most in a game and came on the same night the C’s raised Banner 18. The Celtics showed zero sign of a championship hangover. However, New York showed it would need time to integrate new additions Mikal Bridges and Karl-Anthony Towns.
Brunson scored a team-high 22 points, and as the leader of the Knicks, he didn’t make excuses Tuesday night.
“That’s an easy way out, but we still got our ass kicked,” Brunson told reporters when asked about New York trying to figure things out with new players, per SNY. “We just got to come out and see if we can be better. Yeah, we haven’t been together for a long time for a fairly new team, but that’s another conversation.”
Brunson’s teammate Josh Hart had a different reaction to the Knicks’ loss. Regardless, Tuesday night showed New York has a long way to go if it hopes to catch up to the Celtics in the championship picture.
