The New York fans seemed to be prepared for whatever would come their way
MLB reportedly made a decision on the two New York Yankees fans who interfered with former Boston Red Sox star Mookie Betts.
The league banned the fans from attending World Series Game 5 on Wednesday, a league spokesperson told The Athletic’s Brendan Kuty. In Game 4, the fans grabbed Betts’ glove and pried it open to let the ball he caught in foul territory loose.
Austin Capobianco, 38, from Connecticut, was ejected after the incident in the first inning of the Yankees’ 11-4 win Tuesday night. Another fan, who ESPN identified as John Peter, was ejected alongside Capobianco.
New York released a statement agreeing with MLB’s decision and the MLB Players Association also wished for the fans to be banned from attending Game 5. Darren Capobianco said his brother Austin was a Yankees season-ticket holder. The club did not determine what the status of those season tickets would be after Tuesday’s incident.
The fans’ actions immediately went viral and drew various reactions from those who thought it was funny to those who condemned the actions. Betts told reporters after the game his wrist was fine, and the Los Angeles Dodgers star didn’t escalate the situation further.
First pitch for Game 5 of the World Series is scheduled at 8:08 p.m. ET at Yankee Stadium, and those fans will need to find another place to watch their team survive another game.
