Bill Belichick got into trade talk this week, and New England Patriots fans reminded the former head coach of an infamous trade from his Hall of Fame career.
Belichick weighed in on the Davante Adams trade rumors and what he would do as a head coach. The 72-year-old admitted on his Underdog Fantasy show that a second-round draft pick was too expensive for Adams.
Normally, that would be a fair argument. The All-Pro wide receiver will come off a hamstring injury if a team trades for him, and the 31-year-old already had multiple injuries in the past few seasons. However, since it was Belichick who made the comment, fans quickly pointed out a 2019 midseason trade when New England traded a second-round pick for Mohamed Sanu.
You don’t have to be a future Hall of Famer to know that a wide receiver who’s never had a 1,000-yard season in his 10-year career was not worth a second-round pick. Sanu had an unremarkable 207 receiving yards and one touchdown in eight games with the Patriots before he was released the following season.
Fans on social media had a field day calling out the irony of Belichick’s Adams comments.

To Belichick’s credit, he also noted a team would have to carry Adams’ hefty salary, which was why he prioritized the importance of getting these situations done early so they don’t become a problem midseason.

But Sanu did get a moment back in the spotlight even if it wasn’t in the most positive light.
