Patriots Champion Believes New England Should Hire Brian Daboll If Fired By Giants

Is Brian Daboll the answer to New England's offensive woes?

Two-time Patriots Super Bowl champion Rob Ninkovich wants to see New England upgrade its coaching staff.

Which coach would Ninkovich handpick for that cause? Brian Daboll.

Ninkovich wouldn’t have Daboll replace Jerod Mayo, who is just four games into his head coaching tenure after taking over for Bill Belichick, but join Mayo’s staff as New England’s offensive coordinator.

For that to happen the Patriots would need to part ways with current offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt and for things to go really south for Daboll with the New York Giants. And both of those are realistic possibilities.

“Go get Daboll? Bring him back? I like it,” Ninkovich said on a recent episode of “The Dan and Ninko Show.” “He was my neighbor for years. He was our neighbor. He actually moved into Mayo’s house. I used to walk in there and he’d be like, ‘Look at all my offensive calls, playbooks,’ and I’d say, ‘Wow, cool, impressive.’ He had a shelf in his dining room and it was lined with playbooks. Dude, I’m all for it.”

Daboll’s time as the Giants head coach appears to be on thin ice. He’s 16-21 over two-plus seasons with New York and looks to be on his way to a rough campaign with the Giants off to a 1-3 start.

Daboll has an obvious connection to the Patriots after spending 11 seasons with the franchise over two stints. And his relationship with Mayo, as detailed by Ninkovich, could make it easier to bring him on board.

Daboll also could be a better fit than Van Pelt, who has done little to impress by presiding over an anemic Patriots offense this season which ranks second-to-last in the NFL in points per game and last in yards per game, to develop Drake Maye. Maye has similar traits to Bills star quarterback Josh Allen and Daboll is credited with helping Allen transform into a perennial MVP candidate during his four seasons with Buffalo.

If the Giants decide to move on from Daboll, it might be worth the Patriots checking in with him. We already know Ninkovich would support the move to hire him.
