Patriots’ Jerod Mayo Admits To Sending Messages Through Media

Jerod Mayo didn’t mince words when he said the Patriots are a “soft football team across the board,” moments after New England lost its sixth straight game.

Was his message to the media something he was hoping would reach the players? In a word, yes.

“Every time I talk to you guys, I understand that the players read all of that stuff,” Mayo told reporters per team-provided transcript. “I always use this vehicle as a way to reinforce a message or get a message out to those guys.”

Mayo admitted he doesn’t know what’s causing the Patriots to play “soft,” but it also hasn’t changed overnight.

“I’m not sure,” Mayo said. “I mean, that’s something that I have to think about. We have a long flight back. I’m not sure. It’s not like all of a sudden, we did something different and now we’re a soft football team. It’s just the mentality that we got to get back in the guys.”

So how can the Patriots fix things and become “harder” going forward?

“There is always a way to be harder,” Mayo said. “There’s always a balance in doing that. Again, six straight losses … I mean, they feel bad about it as well. As a professional player, you feel bad about losses just like everyone else. It’s about going back to the drawing board and try to put some stuff together.”

The mindset going forward for the Patriots is pretty simple for Mayo.

“I think the main goal is to win next week.”
