Patriots Legend Second-Guesses This Aspect Of Drake Maye Decision

Devin McCourty believes the Patriots could have played things differently

It only took five weeks for the New England Patriots to bench Jacoby Brissett and turn the offense over to Drake Maye.

Maye reportedly will make his first career NFL start Sunday when the Patriots host the Houston Texans at Gillette Stadium.

The move to Maye certainly is a controversial one given the deplorable state of New England’s entire offense and many wondering if this is the right landing spot in the season for the rookie quarterback.

Patriots legend Devin McCourty found another aspect of the decision to second-guess and felt the team would have been better off keeping the news of Maye starting closer to the vest.

“Wish they would have made Houston figure this out on gameday,” McCourty posted Tuesday on the X platform.

It’s a valid point by McCourty. There’s no rule stating the Patriots have to reveal their starting quarterback five days prior to the game.

What do you think?  Leave a comment.

They could have played some gamesmanship and let the Texans believe that Brissett would be under center again ready to take another pounding before surprising them with Maye running out with the offensive for the first series.

But there will be no surprise in store for the Texans. They can throw out what they had prepared for Brissett and turn their attention to studying Maye with plenty of time to do so.

How much of a difference will it ultimately make Sunday? Who knows. But a perceived edge is better than none at all.
