'That's what makes my career even more special'
Four-time Super Bowl champion Rob Gronkowski was certainly a larger-than-life tight end on the football field.
What you may not know is the former Patriots star was also a menace in the local bars.
Laith Wallschleger, who portrays Gronkowski in the Aaron Hernandez miniseries “American Sports Story,” explained that he carried the five-time Pro Bowler out of a bar during his time in New England when he joined “The Up & Adams Show” on Wednesday.
Gronkowski not only confirmed the story but added a bit more context.
“That’s what makes my career even more special,” Gronkowski told host Kay Adams. “Back in the day, when I was playing for New England, I was probably carried out, I would say, of a bar, probably five to 10 times in my career while playing for the Patriots.
“To be that drunk, and then go out and perform on the football field, you gotta be a special talent to be able to do that. So it makes my career that much more legendary, that’s for sure.”
Wallschleger said he almost broke his back carrying Gronkowski but made sure the Patriots legend made it home safe.
The 35-year-old played 11 NFL seasons with the Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He amassed 9,268 receiving yards on 621 catches and scored 92 touchdowns. He owns the NFL record for most total touchdowns in a season by a tight end (18) and most receiving touchdowns in a season by a tight end (17). Gronkowski was selected by New England in the second round of the 2010 NFL Draft.
