Ohtani shared a lofty goal with his boss
Shohei Ohtani made his mark in the 2024 season.
The Los Angeles Dodgers superstar hit 54 home runs, stole 59 bases and capped off his spectacular regular season with a World Series title.
After LA defeated the New York Yankees in five games to clinch the 2024 World Series championship on Wednesday night, Ohtani had a message for Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman.
“All right,” Ohtani told Friedman, per The Athletic’s Rustin Dodd. “Nine more, nine more.”
Nine more? Kind of cryptic, right? Not to Ohtani.
Ohtani was referring to the number of titles he expects the Dodgers to win since he has nine seasons remaining with the club.
“In his first year (with the Dodgers), he won a championship,” Friedman said, according to Dodd. “He’s like, ‘This is easy. We’re just gonna do it again nine more times.'”
It’s a pretty lofty goal for the Japanese phenom. But then again, he is quite the unprecedented player.
“I think there’s a legitimate argument that he’s the greatest player to ever play the game,” Friedman said. “SI, obviously, all this does is help further that.
Ohtani signed a $700 million contract with the Dodgers this past winter. Even though Tommy John surgery left him unable to pitch this season, he delivered with his bat. He slashed .310/.390/.646 across 159 games with LA.
