New England Patriots wide receiver Ja’Lynn Polk pushed back on Jerod Mayo’s recent critiques about the rookie’s string of dropped passes.

Polk told MassLive’s Mark Daniels he wasn’t going through any “mental” hurdles like Mayo referenced. The second-round pick proceeded to offer a glowing self-review.

“I believe I have the best hands in the league,” Polk told Daniels. “So, I feel like my drops, that’s not an issue at all.”

Well, Polk’s sentiments aged terribly — and quickly.

Polk was targeted twice during the first half of Sunday’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Both passes from quarterback Drake Maye hit Polk in the hands and the wide receiver failed to haul in either one of them.

The first pass from Maye — first-and-10 from the New England 48-yard line less than two minutes into the game — was a play Polk absolutely should have made. The second such target would have been a difficult grab, to be fair. Polk took a shot to the back from a fast-approaching Jaguars defender as he tried to make the catch near the sideline. However, a top wideout with the best hands in the league would have made such a play.

Countless Patriots reporters and fans took to social media and expressed the same.

Polk entered Week 7 with two official drops. He had another ball hit his hands against the Houston Texans that didn’t go for a drop, and neither those which took place in the first half against the Jaguars will go for drops either. But they all were catchable passes, at the very least, and plays he should have made.
