Bruins Make Notable Roster Move After Deflating Overtime Loss

Matt Poitras played in 14 of the Bruins’ first 16 games of the season, but his next tilt won’t be with the Black and Gold.

Boston on Monday afternoon announced it assigned Poitras to Providence. The roster move was made following a cold stretch for the 20-year-old, who only logged one point in his last seven games with the Bruins. Poitras was limited to 11:08 time on ice — his second-lowest mark of the season — in Saturday’s overtime loss to the Ottawa Senators at TD Garden.

Poitras’ demotion was forecasted a bit last week when Jim Montgomery provided an honest assessment of the 2022 second-round pick. While the Bruins head coach praised Poitras’ creativity and competitive fire, he did note how the youngster still tends to put himself in “bad situations.”

The Ontario native most recently skated on a Bruins third line featuring Charlie Coyle and Cole Koepke. Montgomery now will have to tweak that alignment, as well as others, for Tuesday night’s battle with the Blues in St. Louis.

Poitras, who played 33 games with the Bruins last season, was limited to one goal and three assists over 14 contests to start the campaign.
