It doesn't sound like these two former teammates will resolve their issues any time soon
Kendrick Perkins isn’t very fond of Brian Scalabrine, and the NBC Sports Boston broadcaster took his chance to fire back.
A spicy rumor surfaced last week that alleged Perkins was “banned” from Celtics ring night. That came months after the 2008 NBA champion was not seen on the duck boats in Boston’s championship parade.
There seems to be an icy relationship between the franchise and Perkins, and the ESPN analyst directed the cause of that relationship on Scalabrine despite previously claiming he had no issue with his former teammate. However, if you think Scalabrine is the orchestrator of icing Perkins out of the Celtics organization, he has a response for you.
“Well, first of all, I really do feel sorry for anybody that actually believes that during the midst of all the stuff that I do, with my wife, three kids, the Big3, Celtics broadcasts, flying around, that I had a meeting with the Celtic brass and I decided who was allowed on the float and not allowed on the float,” Scalabrine said Wednesday on the “WEEI Afternoon Show.” “I feel really bad for anybody that actually believes that or if Kendrick Perkins is trying to recruit and say that somehow I am actually in control of that.
“And by the way, I’m not going to go out there and post or anything. I have text messages and screenshots of me and Perk. Me going, ‘Hey, Perk, I really would love for you to be there, man. It’s going to be awesome, but I think you should reach out to Joe (Mazzulla) and just apologize, like hey, man, you’ve done a great job. I’m really sorry.’ And he took that, and he’s making it like this. So I think it’s a massive distraction from him to say I called Joe Mazzulla a terrible name. I called him an idiot, and you can go criticize what a coach does, you can criticize what a player does. The general rule is don’t call people stupid. And because of that — and I don’t know if he feels bad about it or if he thinks that people are going to believe him — he’s now making this about me. It’s not about me. This is not about me. And if anybody actually thinks this is about me, I feel bad for you.”
Scalabrine referenced Perkins’ infamous insult toward Mazzulla where he mocked the Celtics head coach for having the intelligence of a bird. Mazzulla seemed to answer back with a “bird brain” joke, and Scalabrine confirmed Wednesday that there were sour feelings over the comment.
Perkins revealed that Mazzulla invited him to dinner at some point this season. That seems like an opportunity for the sides to hash things out. However, as for Perkins and Scalabrine, it doesn’t seem like things will get resolved between the former teammates any time soon.
