Maye outdueled Williams in their first head-to-head matchup
Last Sunday’s Patriots-Bears game featured a matchup of supremely talented rookie quarterbacks, but one had a far more pleasant day than the other.
Drake Maye extended his streak of games with at least one touchdown to five at Soldier Field, where New England staged arguably its best performance of the season to date. Caleb Williams, meanwhile, was held without a touchdown for a third straight contest and was sacked a season-high nine times in the Patriots’ 19-3 win in Chicago.
FOX cameras captured a midfield meeting between Maye and Williams after the first head-to-head matchup of their very young careers. A mic’d-up video released by the Patriots on Tuesday revealed what New England’s signal-caller said to his fellow 2024 top-five pick.
“You’re that guy,” Maye told Williams. “Best of luck, man. Stay healthy, bro.”
The Week 10 showing by Williams and company was so lousy that Chicago fired offensive coordinator Shane Waldron two days after the lopsided affair. It might not be terribly long until the USC product has a new head coach, too, as the Bears dropped to 4-5 last weekend and face a nightmarish schedule the rest of the way.
All told, Maye’s NFL future is starting to look a bit brighter than Williams’.
