Jerod Mayo Gave This Reason Why Patriots Played For Overtime Vs. Titans

The Patriots scored on the final play of regulation

The New England Patriots scored a stunning touchdown on the final play of regulation on Sunday when Drake Maye evaded multiple Tennessee Titans and found Rhamondre Stevenson for the touchdown.

That left New England with a decision to make in Tennessee: Tie the game with an extra point or go for the two-point conversion and the win.

The Patriots opted for the tie, went to overtime and could not finish the job in a 20-17 loss to the Titans.

Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo explained the final decision.

“At the time, I felt like that was the right thing to do,” Mayo told reporters, per team-provided video. “It’s easy to make a judgement one way or the other. I thought that was the right thing to do at the time.”

Mayo deflected when asked if the extensive scoring play (and scoring drive) played a factor in the decision-making.

“I don’t want to get into that,” Mayo said. “It’s a good question. I just don’t want to get into it now.”

New England faces another challenge in Week 10 when the Maye and the Patriots face rookie quarterback Caleb Williams and the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field.
