McDaniel is not thrilled to see Maye develop
The Patriots may have been blown out by the Dolphins in Week 12, but Miami head coach Mike McDaniel believes the future is bright in New England with Drake Maye as the quarterback.
In reality, McDaniel isn’t looking forward to the Patriots having another star quarterback on their roster.
“He’ll continue to make plays as he gets better and better in the pocket,” McDaniel told reporters, per team-provided video. “It’s a guy that, honestly, I’m not really rooting for his development being in the division. But, I can appreciate the player, and they have a very good player to work with at that position, so we’ll continue to have to be on our stuff.”
Maye didn’t have much of an opportunity to showcase his upside in the lopsided Patriots loss, but nonetheless, McDaniel was impressed with what he saw.
“I think he had ownership of the game even a little bit more than what it’s shown on tape,” McDaniel said. “He made some plays in a similar fashion that he’s made on tape.
“I think when you’re able to be a pocket passer but then extend plays and make teams pay when you’re in man coverage or two-man, it’s a problem.”
The Patriots rookie threw for 222 yards, going 22-for-37 and 31 rushing yards on five carries. Maye threw one touchdown to Austin Hooper and had two turnovers in the loss.
The lone offensive touchdown came when Maye rolled out of pressure, avoiding a Chop Robinson sack and hitting a wide-open Hooper, who was planted at the 4-yard line. Robinson hit Maye three times in the game for Miami.
Maye became the first quarterback in the league to have 10 different receivers catch touchdown passes to start their career since Denver Broncos signal-caller Steve Ramsey from 1971-73, according to the CBS broadcast.
