NFL Great Offers First Impressions Of Patriots Quarterback Drake Maye

'I do know some people that know him very well'

Drake Maye’s past six performances have earned the rookie quarterback respect within and beyond the New England Patriots organization.

The 22-year-old took over for then-starter Jacoby Brissett in Week 6 against the Houston Texans and hasn’t looked back ever since. Maye’s promotion as head coach Jerod Mayo’s go-to signal-caller hasn’t dug New England out of its divot, but it’s allowed the North Carolina product to garner a handful of positive reviews.

“I’ve been really, really impressed with the complete package that I’ve seen from Drake Maye here early in his career,” Hall of Famer Kurt Warner said on NESN’s “Foxbro Rush” podcast.

Maye, so far, has thrown for 1,236 yards with nine touchdowns and six interceptions, gaining trust and league-wide recognition little by little. The Patriots expressed their trust in Maye panning out by selecting him with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 draft, placing the keys to the franchise’s future in Maye’s hand.

“I do know some people that know him very well,” Warner added. “And everybody that I’ve talked to that knows him very well has said and told me during the process, ‘Hey, this guy wants to be great. This guy has the work ethic. This guy has the mindset to be everything you want in a franchise quarterback.’ You hear that already and just watching him in interviews and hearing him talk, it sure feels like that on top of what everybody said.”

It’s more than likely that New England won’t make the playoffs, again, for the third straight year. But Maye’s early developments warrant optimism for the near future as the Patriots claw to get back to the winning ways of the Tom Brady-Bill Belichick dynasty.
