Maye tossed a touchdown at the buzzer
Drake Maye turned in what might be the defining play of his early career with the New England Patriots on Sunday.
New England trailed the Tennessee Titans by a touchdown with four seconds remaining at Nissan Stadium. The rookie quarterback scrambled through defenders and hit Rhamondre Stevenson for the game-tying score. The Titans got the win in overtime after the Patriots evened the score in surprising fashion.
Maye broke down the energizing play while reminding everyone it “really didn’t matter” given New England’s loss.
“Think it was on the five (yard line),” Maye told reporters, per team-provided video. “They drop out the guys on the five. Got a chance to tie it up. Just do whatever I can. I think they zoned it off and doubling the inside guys. We had a bunch of concepts and back line. I think Hunter (Henry) got run out of bounds. Just trying to keep the play alive and make a play. Rhamondre, good for a running back to play out there like a receiver and make a good play.”
Maye threw an interception in overtime that wrapped up another game with flashes of brilliances joined by instances of rookie mistakes. Nonetheless, the Patriots should love what they see from the North Carolina product.
Maye faces another rookie quarterback in Week 10 when the Patriots visit Caleb Williams and the Chicago Bears.
