'I think those guys respected it'
The New England Patriots earned their third win of the season, defeating the Chicago Bears, 19-3, at Soldier Field.
Before New England traveled to the Windy City, rookie quarterback Drake Maye was frustrated during practice and asked Patriots offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt if he could address the offense. Maye revealed what the message was to his teammates.
“I think just little things. I think just taking that next step is me being the quarterback in the offensive meeting room,” Maye admitted, per team-provided video. “These little things that are adding up and hurting us in practice that are leading to game day.
“Last week, I mentioned we had second and third down in the two-minute drill we ran; we couldn’t pick up one yard. Little things like that, just little details and focus. I think sometimes in the practice mode, where you’re just running plays, I really tuned in and tried to execute specific plays and trying to get in a groove of, ‘Hey, we’re just running plays out here for nothing.’ Really try to challenge those guys and challenge myself to take each play and know when a game comes, and this play is called … it matters.”
Maye thought he might have stumbled through some of the words he was trying to convey, but he felt the message was well received.
“I think those guys respected it,” he said.
Patriots running back Rhamondre Stevenson led the rushing game with 74 yards on 20 carries. While he admitted Maye did address the offense, he declined to reveal what the quarterback said.
“I appreciate the question,” he told reporters, per team-provided video. “But, I’ll keep it to myself.”
New England will look to build on its win when the Patriots host the Los Angeles Rams at Gillette Stadium in Week 11.
