Patriots Release Defender After Struggling Against Rams

New England reportedly made a change to the cornerback depth chart

UPDATE (4:04 p.m. ET): The New England Patriots on Monday announced they activated cornerback Alex Austin to the 53-man roster and released cornerback Marco Wilson.

Original story: The New England Patriots reportedly are making an adjustment to their cornerback depth chart.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Monday the Patriots waived cornerback Marco Wilson.

Wilson played a season-low 17% of defensive snaps during New England’s 28-22 loss to the Los Angeles Rams at Gillette Stadium on Sunday.

The 25-year-old played 40% of defensive snaps the week prior and played 30% or more in six of the 10 games he was active. He routinely served as the fourth cornerback behind Christian Gonzalez, Jonathan Jones and Marcus Jones.

Wilson allowed three catches on three targets for 58 yards against the Rams, per Pro Football Focus.

Patriots cornerback Alex Austin is the most likely suitor for Wilson’s roster spot. However, perhaps New England could look externally with former Patriots defensive back Myles Bryant released by the Houston Texans.
