Pedro Martinez pitched and served as a central character at the height of the rivalry between the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees in the early 2000s.

There’s been flashes of that fire since then in 2018 and 2021 when the Red Sox eliminated the Yankees in the postseason. The last three years saw Boston miss the postseason with a less-than-ideal roster at times while New York advanced to the World Series for the first time since 2009.

Martinez hopes the Red Sox make the proper moves this winter to return to postseason play and restore the aura Boston presented to their greatest rivals at their peak.

“I really need to have the Red Sox represent like we used to,” Martinez told reporters, per The Boston Globe’s Julian McWilliams. “I’m going to say this, a Yankee fan told me this year, ‘I used to love going to watch you pitch because we had someone really good that we needed to beat, and that was you. Now it doesn’t feel like we really have the same push.'”

Martinez continued: “I’m going to tell my pitchers that because it really hit me to know that the Yankees fans wanted to go see me because I was someone that represented the Red Sox and I represented the challenge.”
