There could be a second round of meetings this week or next week
Red Sox fans made a lot of assumptions about the team’s meeting with Juan Soto and more clarity was revealed Tuesday.
Boston, as well as the Toronto Blue Jays, New York Mets and New York Yankees, met with the star free agent last week. Soto reportedly was “impressed” with the Red Sox’s presentation which included a video of the Dominican stars who’ve played for the club like David Ortiz, Pedro Martinez and Manny Ramirez.
Fans and pundits weren’t pleased to hear that the meeting reportedly was “largely introductory and informational” and thought financials should have been discussed. However, the New York Post’s Jon Heyman added more context to Soto’s meetings with teams.
“The Soto meetings this week and last were not a time for offers. They were getting acquainted sessions, especially for owners,” Heyman posted on X. “No offers are believed to have been made at these get-togethers.”
That should make sense for fans. Soto will make what arguably is the biggest decision of his life. He and his agent Scott Boras won’t make any hasty decisions and will consider all options. The Los Angeles Dodgers reportedly will meet with the 26-year-old, so the first round of meetings won’t end at the beginning of this week.
The All-Star outfielder reportedly asked the Red Sox about factors outside of money, so he’ll have plenty of time to contemplate whether or not they are the best fit for him. Boston and the other teams in the running for Soto will hope to get in on the second round of meetings where financials likely will be discussed.
